How do you feel about the end of privacy on public places? In public transport? When you can identfy every stranger that passes by? When every stranger can indentify you without your knowledge?
While this might be still a bit away, the NY Times reports that a start-up called Clearview AI is using a massive database with 3 billion images for facial recognition. The data has been scraped from social media, YouTube, and Venmo. The main customers are US law enforcement agencies that use Clearviews services.
Clearview’s product even works with augmented reality glasses, adding an additional dystopian touch to their service:
“It’s creepy what they’re doing, but there will be many more of these companies. There is no monopoly on math,” said Al Gidari, a privacy professor at Stanford Law School. “Absent a very strong federal privacy law, we’re all screwed.”
