Starting with a Steven Jobs quote at at the 1983 International Design Conference on the design of computers
If you’ve looked at computers, they look like garbage
the article discusses the influence Dieter Rams had on Jony Ive and on the desgin of Apple products of the last two decades. Apple has brought us more than a billion beautifully made, and accessible products. But it has come at the expense of usefulness, durability and ultimately respect for the environment. Who of us will use AirPods in 10 years?
With Ive leaving, Apple has a chance to change their design focus and realign their design princicples along two important principles by Rams:
- Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.
- Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user.
